How to Pack Boxes for Your Relocation

Student Movers has put together some great tips for making your relocation a success. Be sure to incorporate these suggestions for packing up your furniture and personal belongings for your upcoming student move:

  • Moving takes time so leave lots of time for packing. It is best to allow at least two weeks before your move date and plan carefully as this is sure to save you time and money.
  • Decide what will move with you and what will stay behind. There may be items that you do not need anymore or that are not worth moving. Perhaps your move is temporary and certain unnecessary things can be put into storage. No matter what the answer is, decide beforehand what stays and what goes
  • Try to estimate how many boxes and other packing supplies you will need.
  • Start collecting boxes a few weeks in advance of packing so you can be assured you have the quantity and sizes to accommodate all your belongings.
  • You can find free moving boxes from various places. An off- license or supermarket is a good start and offers the right size of box for packing books and dishes. Other places to try are offices, bookshops, and quick serve restaurants.
  • Gather more boxes than you think you will need. You will be surprised as you start packing just how much you have accumulated during the course of your studies.
  • Keep box weight to a minimum. To prevent injury to yourself, your family, friends or the movers, make sure your boxes are not too heavy to manage. Most boxes should weigh less than 50 pounds with an ideal weight being 40 pounds or less. If you have any overweight boxes, make sure you mark them clearly so that no one injures themselves on the job.
  • Properly label boxes with stickers that instruct the movers on how to handle the contents, including those that state items are fragile and should be handled with care. Labels are also a great way to help organise your boxes. Stickers can be bought at an office supply store or made on your own computer.
  • Apart from labelling the boxes, you should also number the boxes. This way, if a box goes missing, you can easily identify the number and the contents.
  • Make sure you properly wrap all fragile items in several layers of bubble wrap and pack them on their edge (plates, mirrors, picture frames, etc). This is an inexpensive solution that will prevent dishes and other fragile items from bumping against one another. Relying on newspapers will put you at risk of having some plates broken.
  • For some items, such as a TV set, computer, bike and musical instruments try to use the box they came in if you happened to have kept these boxes. If you no longer have the box, ask your moving company to pack these items for you at an additional charge.
